Invisible Injury

Invisible Injury
(Mike Wheatley)

I am an injury that no one can physically see;
 an injury so emotionally devastating.
You need not only be a combat vet to be destroyed by me.
Your age doesn’t matter, I can affect anybody.
You can be 5, 12, 28 or even 60.
I arrive in your mind when you've been through something unseemly
I’m fierce, almost debilitating.
Suicide...is what I'll have you contemplating.
Which method to use...which way is what I will have you debating.
A bullet…a knife…maybe a hanging?
Things you’ll continue to consider because, well…nothing is changing.
I create animosity amongst those who thought you were king.
I will turn friends your against you, make them think you’re faking
Your family will begin to suffer from my confusing ways,
Your children don’t understand…why daddy won’t come and play
The things I’ve got you thinking about are making you push them away.
You are so consumed in the sorrow that I bring, they will be turned away.
Many doctors, therapist and counselors you’ll see,
They will try and teach you methods to try and control me.
If I’m really good at what I do, you’ll be hospitalized…maybe,
I bring different types of pain and deliver them to your mind.
I’ll bring nightmares, flashbacks and anxiety at any given time,
The things I can cause in your mind ought to be a crime.
So you take handfuls of medications at hopes to flush your mind,
Wishing the drugs will eventually flush me away,
You can’t get rid of me, I am a nasty plague
I am honored to tell you, my loyal HOST,
I will not be going away, I am here to stay.
Our vows were said already, although I am NOT your wife,
We will be together for every bit of your life.
There IS NO getting rid of me
I am almost like a disease.
You are wondering my name by now?
It is…
P.T.S.D
